When you mention roundabouts, most people would associate the circular intersection with European road intersection applications, designed to improve safety and mobility as pointed out in the recent FHWA Innovator summer newsletter "creating safer intersections".
Since 1990, when the first roundabout was built in the United States, circa 4000 have benn constructed and by 2010 all 50 states and Washington D.C. had a roundabout in operation - this innovative safety trend is continuing to grow.
Although roundabouts by their nature are traffic calming devices, there are instances where advanced warning of an approaching roundabout is helpful e.g. road topography, high speed entry.
Unipart Dorman have been commissioned to supply a dynamic LED advisory W2-6 diagram VATCS as part of the Powell Butte Highway roundabout project in Deschutes County, Oregon. The sign will be installed later this summer and we will provide updates and feedback via the blog.
