As Ambassadors Manager for Young Rail Professionals - North West Region, Unipart Dorman's Tom Haynes met Tracey Barber - the brains behind a trial event called "Rail Human Library" with Denton Community College in Manchester. The event concentrated on Rail Industry career advice and followed a "speed dating" style set up, where 30 professionals were stationed around the room in groups of two or three and students rotated around in groups of three and four.
On the day Tom with Katie Smith and Dan Beker from Unipart Rail spent an hour each with a year 9 cohort and a year 8 cohort and together they promoted our careers in Rail to these students.
This was the first time any of these students had been given the opportunity to discuss their future with professionals. Following the event we received feedback direct from the school stating:
- 100% of the students want the school to host more events like it
- 63% said they very much enjoyed the event
- 66% said the event has made them think much more about their future career.
Overall the event was very positive, the students were very engaged and enthusiastic and the positive feedback for this trial means that Rail Human Library will most likely come back with a vengeance. We look forward to giving it more support in the future.
