The SSI Data Link is considered to be the Achilles heel of Solid-State Interlocking (SSI) and its design is complicated and is something of a black art.
Despite many years of standardisation and the provision of clear guidance it can still prove problematic. Even if a data link is robust when commissioned, changes and variations to the signalling layout can result in unexpected adverse consequences on data link performance.
The data link also degrades with time (surge arrestors, cables and data link internal components). A high level of expertise is necessary to understand, make changes and maintain the SSI Data Links.
Park Signalling has an excellent understanding of SSI and produces many tools that aid the understanding of the workings and performance of the data link, including the SSI Data Link Modelling Tool and Support Service.
The SSI Data Link Modelling Tool requires knowledge of the data link topography, layout and components as inputs (i.e. a data link schematic). This tool can then accurately predict the performance of a data link system. The use of the tool can pre-empt problems which can occur after the process of testing and commissioning. Rectification is potentially very expensive and time consuming without the use of the tool and the service support that Park Signalling can provide.
