Thales System Up and Running on London Underground

with a new suite of signals from Unipart Dorman

Over the last few years, Unipart Dorman has been working closely with Thales to develop a range of new signals for the modernisation of four London Underground lines (Hammersmith and City, Metropolitan, District and Circle) - the 4LM project

Unipart Dorman had the role of developing a new suite of signals that will offer unrivalled levels of signal reliability, including a number of further technical challenges than those we have faced in the past. Utilising a dedicated design team, the signals used the technology offered on our current range of mainline signalling, while also ensuring the specific challenges and needs of the operating environment were taken into account.

The new Thales signalling system is now operating between Hammersmith and Latimer Road and is the first part of the network to benefit from the improvements with completion targeted for 2023. The upgrades will significantly improve both reliability and capacity, in turn, increasing train frequency in central London from 28 to 32 per hour, providing space for an extra 36,500 passengers.

Full details of the works can be found HERE. As well as Unipart Dorman developing a range of innovative signals for the project, Thales engaged Unipart Rail in February 2016 to provide logistics services for the whole of the five and a half year project - more details on our Supply Chain Solutions can be found HERE.
