The Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE)/Signet award was established as part of Signet Solutions Ltd 21st Anniversary celebrations in 2016. The company has become a leading provider of high value signalling engineering training both in the UK and in other countries around the world.
Signet has also been a long-term supporter of the IRSE as professional body for the signal engineering discipline. This is obviously two-fold by providing established and well-respected training courses across the disciplines within signal engineering, as well as providing support to sections of the IRSE organisation. Signet tutors provide their time voluntarily in support of IRSE study weekends which allow budding delegates studying for the IRSE exam modules to avail themselves of the skills and guidance of the tutors along with other volunteers within the industry. Signet is also a sponsor of many IRSE events (Minor Railways section, International conventions).
Signet has always had an association with the IRSE and following discussions the two organisations agreed to establish the IRSE/Signet award in 2016 to recognise this commitment to the support of developing signal engineers within the industry. There are other awards which recognise achievement within the IRSE exam (Thorowgood Fellowship), however the IRSE/Signet award is a specific award for the highest achieved mark in an individual module.
This year’s award winner was Robin Lee of Park Signalling Ltd, Robin obtained the highest mark in Module 2 of the IRSE Exam (Signalling Principles). The award was presented at the IRSE AGM in London on the 27th April which was followed by the IRSE Annual Dinner at the Savoy Hotel. The award sponsors the winner to attend the IRSE annual convention which this year is in Switzerland at the end of May and will provide Robin with the opportunity to study how another Infrastructure deal with the challenges it faces. This will then result in a paper produced by Robin being published in the IRSE NEWS.
