Unipart Dorman
Pennsylvania DOT are evaluating the effectiveness of the Unipart Dorman Dynamic Curve Warning Series VATCS on an exit ramp from I-181 SB to 581EB as part of an FHWA approved work plan to assess potential for reducing rollovers and crashes. The location is in Cumberland County near Harrisburg.
More than 25 percent of fatal crashes are associated with a horizontal curve, and the vast majority of these crashes are roadway departures. The average crash rate for horizontal curves is approximately three times greater than other types of highway segments. About three-quarters of curve related crashes involve single vehicles leaving the roadway and striking trees, utility poles, rocks or other fixed objects - or overturning.
The study will build upon the Evaluation of Dynamic Speed Feedback Signs on Curves by Iowa State University in which the Dynamic Curve Warning VATCS were evaluated at known hazardous curve locations across seven states.
