Women in Rail was created to improve diversity in the UK rail industry through providing networking opportunities and support for all women within the sector, and Unipart Rail sent a large delegation to the event held on 29th June at the Derby Conference Centre.
First opened in 1938, the original school could accommodate up to fifty railway operatives and signallers at once. For the following twenty years, the building was used to deliver training for the Royal Engineers and The Railway Engineering School.
Kristin Thorslund, chair of Women in Rail East Midlands said “Last night was a fantastic example of the energy created when like-minded women come together, with a passion for reinforcing their role in the future of the railway industry. I am really looking forward to developing and growing Women in Rail.”
The free networking event included complimentary refreshments, and the chance to connect with fellow rail colleagues and indulge in a glass of wine. Guest speakers included Noel Travers, managing director from Unipart Rail and public speaker, Ruth Sacks.
Kelly Warburton, Commercial Director at Unipart Rail said “Rail is traditionally a male dominated industry, but over the last twenty years we have seen a huge improvement in gender balance. We still have a long way to go, but it is brilliant to see so many women in senior roles.”
Upcoming Women in Rail East Midlands events include a workshop in October called First Step to the Next Step and a Quiz Night in November.
