What is the true cost of buying counterfeit?

We have probably all seen the touts ambling down the beach toward us whilst on holiday, adorned in the latest 'Joakley' sunglasses, arms covered in 'TAG Hour' and 'Blightling' watches and draped with 'Hermiss' scarves and 'Channel' belts. Some of them may be very convincing copies, so why not have some cut price luxury?

But what is the true cost? Take the example of a pair of sunglasses. Which unless you are close enough to read the tiny lens trademark and see that it actually says Roy Ban not Ray Ban you can save over £100 on some pretty cool looking shades. The hidden cost which far outweighs any cash saving though, is that quality sunglasses are designed to filter out harmful Ultra Violet (UV) light. Fakes will not.

If you buy counterfeit, you may save money in the short term, but in safety critical applications such as road danger lamps used at roadworks, significant downstream cost may be incurred.

There is a new imported lamp on the UK market which looks virtually identical to the Unipart Dorman ConeLITE and claims compliance against the current standard EN12352. The manufacturer has unlawfully incorporated the use of Unipart Dorman trademarks and immediate measures have been taken to stop this infringing activity. Whilst it is often said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, if it is a poor quality imitation which will potentially endanger lives – is it really worth the risk

Unipart Dorman have been producing roadlamps for nearly 50 years and during that time have worked hard in not only complying with standards and legislation, but have been heavily involved with respected trade organisations such as REMA, ARTSM and BSi in developing these standards which ensure that the safety of Roadworkers and the general driving public is not compromised.
